What are the effects of state categories on the populations they target? The constructivist turn in sociology, nationalism studies and critical security studies has highlighted the constructed nature of social identities, shaped through performative discourses and practices of categorization. From the classical work in the field of nationalism and citizenship, to the contributions on practices of state identification, the idea that state practices of identification and categorization have direct effects on social “identities” has become commonplace in the literature.
